LCD ON-SURFACE LCD TEMPERATURES AND LCD OPERATION RANGE

Recently we have noticed there is a lot of confusion at the market in regard to temperature operation range of LCD panels. The reason behind being LG and Samsung offering high on-surface temperature resistance LCD panels barring 110⁰C. Many integrators as well as customers believe these systems can operate in extremely hot environments. This is not true as all LCD products are intended (warranted) to operate at maximum temperature of 50⁰C. On-surface temperature concerns occurrence, which means liquid crystals lose capacity to transmit backlight, effecting in blackening of part or whole display. In general there are three basic types of LCD on-surface temperature options in the market:

 

Such, high on-surface resistant LCD systems are intended to be used for behind the window medium. According to both, LG and Infinitus tests, if LCD panel is exposed to direct sun load, on-surface temperature can easily rise in regard to operation ambient +60°C!In practice this means that if sun-exposed LCD operates behind-window in “room temperature” of 25⁰C, solar heat load will raise on-surface temperature to 90⁰C or more!

Outdoor LCD enclosure manufacturers, as well as customers, should understand differences between normal operational inner enclosure environment temperatures (25°C±15°C), warranty valid LCD temperatures (0°C to 50°C) and on surface temperatures which are currently depending of LCD OEM suppliers coming in temperatures of 65°C, 85°C and 110°C.

It is imperative for all systems (unless built on military technology requirements) to hold at least 0°C-50°C inner enclosure temperatures, for decent operation, due to progressive degradation of luminance output and general health of electronics.
