From Traditional to Digital Signage

Brief
The Royal Library of the Netherlands (short KB; Koninklijke Bibliotheek) upgraded their two traditional signs. Paper signs were replaced by a modern communication tool, imotion FLOW 55 Portrait outdoor digital sign.

Situation analysis
KB is the national library of Netherlands, founded in 1798. They are known for creative use of modern technologies. Such example of their digital service is the national online Library.

They wanted to improve visitors experience with sharing useful information and updates. Old obsolete signage had to go. Their idea was to install two library digital totems in high traffic locations, to consistently reach their visitors with “dynamic” content.

Solution
KB needed two high quality, full outdoor digital signs. Their main concern was Netherlands climate and constantly changeable weather. There was a lot of work to change content on old paper-based signs and they weren’t interactive, but they were as reliable as it gets. KB was concerned that new technology isn’t as reliable as the old one, especially because of Netherlands climate. Their fear was justified. Afterall LCDs aren’t really meant for outdoor use. Good thermal management is crucial for proper functioning. The best solution in this context was to use digital signs with a proven working solution. KB chose imotion FLOW technology, which is already implemented in more than 1000 locations.

imotion FLOW technology is based on filtered airflow ventilation. It automatically regulates speed of ventilators (level of cooling) based on real-time requirements within the housing. Same goes with heating. Heaters are automatically turned ON/OFF based on actual temperature. This efficiently (with low power consumption) solves problem with wide temperature range and at the same time ensures optimal lifetime of the critical components such as LCD.

Public display
KB choose imotion FLOW 55” Portrait Freestanding, efficient, fast and professional communication tool. Two outdoor totems were installed at high traffic locations. To ensure visitors engagement 55-inch UHB screens were used.
